The First Wednesday Reading Group: Sci-fi in translation
Clementine Edwards

02.10., 06.11. & 04.12.2024, 19:00 – 21:00

A series of monthly reading groups on science-fiction in translation. The First Wednesday Reading Group will pay attention to how texts build worlds – anticipating, challenging and enacting lived realities – and how they move in different temporal and cultural contexts.
A motivation for the reading group is to explore ways of putting language to experience of queer life while keeping the experience and the learning that comes with it soft, impressionable, with a possibility of spill.

Session 1: 2 October, 19:00 – 21:00
Session 2: 6 November, 19:00 – 22:00
Session 3: 4 December, 19:00 – 22:00

During the October session, we read a short story by Izumi Suzuki, with a supplementary text by Amitav Ghosh.

During the November session, we will read a short story by Norman Erikson Pasaribu with supplementary readings about Han Kang, the 2024 Nobel prize winner for literature, Deborah Smith, and the expansive, controversial realm of translation.

Please sign up to the second session by sending an email to communications@ribrib.nl; numbers are strictly limited.

Hosted by Clementine Edwards at Rib and supported by CBK Rotterdam.

Clementine Edwards is a Rotterdam-based artist whose work moves between language and sculpture. Their work enacts material, experiential and affective residues of daily life. Holding space for enchantment, their work brings into conversation the possibility of the glittering dream castle and the deep knowing that the Disney story cannot exist without the labour, gender and land conditions that produced it. clementineedwards.com
